Google Play Adds Game Finder as Discovery Fight Sharpens

Google is folding recommendation, competition and clip-sharing tools into Play, and tying lower service fees to studio opt-in programs.

Google Play is rolling out a personalized Game Finder, 48-hour competitive Sprints and 30-second clip sharing through its Sidekick overlay, a bundle of discovery features meant to keep players shopping inside the store. Sam Bright, Google Play's vice president and general manager, outlined the changes in a blog post alongside a separate developer note. The You tab has passed 250 million monthly active users, GamesIndustry.biz reported. The platform connects more than 700 million gamer profiles, the site added.

Game Finder recommends titles using a player's tastes, habits and community reviews. It shows the reasoning behind each pick. It launches first in the US for English-language users, with other markets to follow. Sprints run for 48 hours and match small groups of similarly skilled players. Playbacks let Sidekick users capture 30-second clips and send them to friends without leaving the game. Sidekick has passed 285 million users, Google said.

The commercial stake is retention, and retention costs less than acquisition. Game Finder explains why it picked a title, which matters most for games a player has never heard of, since that explanation is what turns a browse into an install. Pressure sits in the fee schedule. Apps Experience and Level Up give standout titles lower service fees. Google said PUBG Mobile, which adopted the Level Up guidelines, lifted new installs from high-value players by 22 percent and spend per buyer among engaged players by 62 percent. Both programs cover the US, UK, EEA, Japan and Australia, with Korea due before the year ends. Eligibility runs through an opt-in: Game Stats unlocks daily Streaks and entry to Leagues and Sprints.

Quests will begin offering in-game items such as skins and boosters, not just Play Points. That pulls studios further into funding the store's loyalty rewards.

PC titles including Dave the Diver and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun arrive on Play with cloud saves across Android and PC, while Game Trials, which let players sample premium games before buying, move from mobile to PC. Google also said Play in Gemini has generated more than 6 million app installs since launching two months ago. It will reach all Gemini users soon.

Adding PC titles extends the store's reach without opening a new market, and the fee programs give studios a reason to keep publishing there.
