Zenonia 1, Gamevil's landmark mobile role-playing game from 2008, has finally returned to players: the title launched on Steam this week in its first official PC port, after disappearing from most mobile app storefronts in recent years and leaving longtime fans without an easy way to revisit it. According to Polygon, this release revives a pioneering title that once proved smartphones could deliver console-quality RPGs independently, without relying on established franchises like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, particularly noteworthy for a game that debuted on feature phones long before the iPhone transformed mobile gaming.
Zenonia's timing proved fortuitous. It arrived during the brief window when feature phones still dominated gaming before touchscreen smartphones eclipsed them entirely. Square Enix had spent years porting Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest to Japanese mobile networks on flip phones, with games like Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII using hardware features like built-in cameras. When iPhones arrived in 2007 and Android followed, those franchises easily transitioned to touchscreens, while Fire Emblem would later bring Nintendo's strategy-RPG pedigree to phones. Zenonia took a different route, building an audience without legacy IP and proving that original mobile-exclusive RPGs could compete on gameplay alone for years.
Visually, Zenonia 1 mimics early Zelda games, particularly A Link to the Past, rendered from overhead with sprite-based graphics. Combat runs in real-time where players choose from three classes: Paladin, Warrior, or Assassin. Each offers full skill trees and hundreds of weapons for customization. What sets Zenonia apart is its dynamic alignment system: player choices push the protagonist toward good or evil, affecting the story's trajectory. Beyond combat, players manage hunger, which decreases spell points, and equipment weight, which reduces movement speed. These mechanics layered depth onto a mobile platform that many assumed could only handle simple experiences.
The protagonist, Regret, is a 17-year-old trying to uncover how his adoptive father died. This fairly typical RPG premise is elevated by the game's side quests and alignment choices. Regret's character design channels early Cloud Strife, complete with spiky blond hair and an outsized greatsword. The narrative may be straightforward, but systems allowing players to play good or evil, manage resources, and explore freely gave Zenonia its staying power.
A full playthrough takes 15 to 30 hours. Zenonia 1 is now officially playable on Windows PC.
