Roblox delisted Steal an Egg shortly after the pet simulator hit the platform's top spot Monday, following a significant wave of viral criticism over its core revenue mechanic. It had attracted more than 500,000 concurrent players. Then it was suddenly pulled from the platform. Polygon reported that the unexpected removal came after the game accumulated millions of negative impressions on social media in just days. Roblox has not publicly explained why it delisted the game, an unusual intervention into one of its platform's most visible breakout hits.
Steal an Egg is a pet simulator where players raise eggs that hatch into money-generating creatures, with a theft mechanic similar to the popular Steal a Brainrot that lets players raid each other's bases. Rarer creatures generate more revenue, incentivizing players to pursue dragons rather than starting animals like chickens.
The controversy centers on speed. Speed can be purchased directly with real money or earned on in-game treadmills where players watch videos, a feature called Reels. Screenshots of players running on these in-game treadmills while promotional videos play went viral on social media. One YouTube video of the mechanic generated 1.3 million views and sparked significant outrage online. Players began comparing the system to Black Mirror's "Fifteen Million Merits," an episode depicting a dystopian world where people pedal stationary bikes to earn money for basic needs. Unlike that fictional world, Steal an Egg's players are willing participants in a game, but the visual parallels still sparked widespread outrage.
Roblox has not publicly stated why it pulled the game, though the platform's strict terms of service may very well provide a clue. Polygon reported that Roblox restricts games from sharing links to unapproved platforms, including TikTok and Instagram Reels. This restriction could explain the delisting if Steal an Egg's video mechanic exposed players to content or links on unapproved sites. On Discord, the game's developers said the game would return within hours and offered in-game compensation to affected players. This removal highlights a growing challenge for Roblox: the platform may struggle to control what content players encounter through in-game video mechanics and recommendation systems.
