HoverAir's drone halted by FCC enforcement

The modular camera-and-drone combo faces import ban just days after launching on Indiegogo

HoverAir's Versa has stopped accepting US orders just three days after its Indiegogo debut. According to The Verge, the company is now telling backers it will ship only the camera to the US, withholding the "Flight Kit" that enables flight, citing undefined "logistics updates." But the timing and FCC database removal suggest federal enforcement, and such regulatory blocks demonstrate how quickly authorities shut down efforts to engineer around US drone import restrictions.

HoverAir's modular Versa combines a camera with snap-on propeller wings that transform it into a flyable device. When Zero Zero Robotics submitted the device for FCC approval, the manufacturer listed it as a camera, not a drone. The company argued it shouldn't face restrictions because Zero Zero isn't on the FCC's covered list for cameras; that's technically true, but federal regulations define cameras as critical drone components. All companies are automatically on the FCC's covered list for drones and related equipment.

That regulatory definition creates an impossible situation.

Even the camera alone cannot legally be imported or sold in the US without proper drone authorization. The FCC database no longer lists the Versa at all, suggesting the original approval has been entirely revoked. On Indiegogo, the Flight Kit no longer appears as a selectable option for shoppers browsing from the United States, though international buyers using VPNs can still see and purchase it. Backers report the campaign cannot ship to their US addresses at all.

HoverAir has faced this situation before—last year, the company's waterproof Aqua model ran into an identical FCC block. Rather than disclose the regulatory issue, the company spent months telling backers that shipping delays were responsible and that orders would resume soon. The truth about the FCC enforcement only emerged gradually through backer inquiries. That history creates skepticism about whether HoverAir will handle disclosure differently this time around.

HoverAir declined immediate comment. Company precedent suggests backers shouldn't expect rapid resolution.
